The South Fire Station is now operational. The Cabildo carried out the official inauguration this Thursday, but the building already has "staff, personnel, and vehicles", according to the institution. The president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, accompanied by the president of the Security and Emergencies Consortium, Juan Manuel Sosa, the general director of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nazaret Díaz, and the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, proceeded to its public opening.
San Ginés reiterated "how proud all the people of Lanzarote are of our firefighters for the good work they do, even in carrying out this project." "I cannot fail to see the change that the Fire Station has had, which was created on January 15, 1991 with 12 firefighters, today it has 44 troops between corporals and firefighters, as well as 16 more places, distributed among technical personnel, emergency agents, administrative and service personnel. They have carried out more than 21,000 actions, many of which translate into lives saved; and they have 4.2 million euros of budget, an admirable evolution", he pointed out.
For his part, the president of the Security and Emergencies Consortium, Juan Manuel Sosa, stressed that "these new facilities are functional." "They have allowed us to recover a building that represents part of the history of the island; and it is located in the perfect place to serve the south center of Lanzarote", he stated.
"We ceded a municipal building of 254 square meters for the construction of this facility that improves the safety of our neighbors and the response capacity to emergencies that may occur in Yaiza and neighboring municipalities. The City Council that I preside over is firmly committed to inter-administrative collaboration as a formula for co-financing projects, considering in this case also that as members of the Security and Emergencies Consortium we make an annual contribution to the entity of 167,000 euros", indicated the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda.
Characteristics
The South Fire Station had a budget of 638,000 euros provided by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and is executed in the so-called 'Casa del Médico' of Uga, a building of 254 square meters ceded by the City Council of Yaiza for this purpose.
The building where the equipment is located is a construction of more than 55 years old, formed by the dispensary and the old family house of the doctor. It has about 160 square meters and is located on a plot of 2,492 square meters in the Miguel Ruiz mountain, at the entrance of the Vallito de Uga. It was specifically a two-story building and a basement part, rectangular in shape. The building where the facilities of the South Zone Fire Station are located occupies a total constructed area of approximately 514.70 square meters. .
From the Cabildo it is pointed out that "the state of conservation in terms of structural aspects was good, but it was not adapted for functional, finishing or installation aspects." Therefore, it is pointed out that "the restructuring of the building necessarily involved demolition work on certain elements of the existing building." The project also required the expansion of the building, "since the constructed area it had did not cover the needs of the new use", it is added.
Being "aware of the age of the construction", the Cabildo points out that the first decision that was made was that "said expansion will affect the existing building as little as possible, where the covering of some terrace spaces is barely projected!. It is projected, therefore, as an independent building the annex for garage, connecting it with the main building, by two passages (one on the ground floor and another on the upper floor), as bridges or "union strips".
In the building, -the Casa del Médico- is the habitable part, which has a training room, bedrooms, toilets, meeting room, reception-control and changing rooms, among other dependencies. And in the independent infrastructure, attached to the garage, connected to the main building, by two passages (one on the ground floor and another on the upper floor) is located in addition to the garage, the emergency vehicles, and the gym. Its implementation on the plot is subordinated to the existing building, positioning it parallel to it, occupying the same length and placing it behind (on the west side) of the most exposed perspective. Avoiding the impact of an enclosure of these characteristics in a rural environment, of low density, was another of the premises that conditioned the project.
Three troops and improvement of the attention time "in 30 minutes"
The Fire Station has three daily troops who are from 08.00 to 20.00 hours at the Playa Blanca post and from eight in the afternoon they move to the Park "because, during the night, the incidents, according to their data, are mostly on the road".
According to the Cabildo, the average attention time in case of accident has improved "in 30 minutes". The service has a jet ski, a 4 x 4 and VUP (Heavy Urban Vehicle) with a capacity of 3,000 liters of water.
Cs celebrates that it is "finally" a reality "after so many years of waiting"
Ciudadanos (Cs) has welcomed the inauguration of the fire station in the south of Lanzarote and has celebrated that it is "finally" a reality "after so many years of waiting". This was expressed by the Cs councilor in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Benjamín Perdomo, who recalled that it was Ciudadanos who presented a proposal in 2015, in which the provision of an intervention post was requested "to reduce the attention time in the southern municipalities".
"It is great news, because it was about time that the southern area of the island had this service, especially because the residents have always suffered delays in the intervention time, and now the attention to the citizens of the south will be expedited", he pointed out
