The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano Zapata, has defended this Friday that the future of the Timanfaya National Park, in Lanzarote, involves leaving vehicles outside the enclosure and accessing it via shuttle buses, considering the current access model "unsustainable".

During a parliamentary commission, Zapata assured that the situation in Timanfaya "is not a new problem", although he stated that the current ministry is addressing it "head-on" with concrete proposals to reduce pressure on the protected natural space.

The minister explained that one of the main lines of action proposed is to implement a collective transport system similar to the one planned for Teide National Park, accompanied by external parking areas coordinated with the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

As indicated, coordination with the island corporation exists and aims to move towards a sustainable mobility system that guarantees the conservation of the park.

Zapata opined that the alternative is clear: to protect the natural space through shuttles that eliminate traffic jams and reduce traffic, or to maintain the current model.

During the parliamentary debate, the deputy of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, Yone Caraballo, demanded urgent measures to avoid the long queues of vehicles registered at the park's entrances during periods of high tourist influx.

Caraballo considered that these images deteriorate the visitor experience and affect the sustainability of one of Lanzarote's main natural enclaves.
