The PSOE requests the “urgent appearance” of Oswaldo Betancort after judicial warnings for his “urban indiscipline”

“We are concerned that the justice system warns the mayor with possible fines of 1,000 euros to be paid out of his own pocket, but even more so that his inexplicable passivity prevents us from getting rid of one of the skeletons that disfigures Costa Teguise,” says Marcos Bergaz.

The PSOE has requested the "urgent appearance" of the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, to give explanations about the warnings from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands regarding his "inexplicable passivity" in the execution of the final judgment that annulled in 2007 the license of one of the skeletons of Costa Teguise, located next to the La Mareta residence.

"We are concerned that the justice system warns the mayor with possible fines of 1,000 euros to be paid out of his own pocket, but even more so that his passivity prevents us from getting rid of one of the urban skeletons that disfigures Costa Teguise," says the socialist spokesperson, Marcos Bergaz.

The councilor refers to the order issued by the Second Chamber of the Administrative Litigation of the TSJC, which personally requires the mayor to report on the measures adopted for the execution of a judgment of July 18, 2007, on a license declared null that affects one of the eternal skeletons. In addition, he recalls that according to the order itself, "in a letter from the mayor dated May 28, 2015, it was indicated that the legalization of the works was not appropriate," so only a demolition would be possible, which to this day has not been carried out.

Bergaz has described the mayor's attitude as "urban indiscipline." "I am sure that if the one who fails to comply is a poor devil, what has been built is knocked to the ground," he questioned. "Urban indiscipline, when not corruption, generates inequality," he warned, stressing that there are "those who comply and those who do not, the powerful offenders and those who do not."

"Teguise does not deserve it"

"The mayor will have to give meridianly convincing explanations to overcome the embarrassment of the TSJC's warnings to the prestige of our institution," the socialists consider.

And they recall that in the order issued on January 18, "he is even warned of coercive fines of 1,000 euros per month if he is not convincing in the explanations that are required of him to determine the reason why he has not yet executed the final judgment of 2007, clarifying that even other types of responsibilities could be deferred." Specifically, the Court warns that it could initiate criminal actions against the mayor, for the commission of a possible crime by failing to comply with a judicial mandate, given that in 2005 it already required "the immediate execution" of the ruling.

"Definitely, the citizens of Teguise do not deserve this new exercise of concealment by the mayor. It is not acceptable to find out about this serious situation through the press," says Marcos Bergaz.

"Oswaldo has been selling the idea for a decade that the skeletons are resolved with a paint and color contest; with the modernization plan or repeatedly reports that such a plot has been purchased and the construction of a new establishment will soon begin, when none of this has been fulfilled," questions the councilman.

"The truth is that a decade later, the skeletons remain and continue to reduce the competitiveness and quality of life of the tourist town and its citizens, due to the bad image they provide, in addition to the fact that they have become a social problem in many cases, with people resorting to them as a form of housing solution."

"On top of that, the justice system itself is now focusing on the mayor's 'passivity in the fight' with an issue that should, for the good of the municipality, the residents and urban legality, be a priority," laments Bergaz.

"We deserve a mayor who is warned with fines on his assets, which by the way is not the first time, they were already warned with the execution of several judicial rulings on the General Plan, and who only reacts when his personal pocket is threatened; and much less that the opportunity to put an end to a social problem is wasted, which disrupts the tourist image of Costa Teguise and makes up an example of urban indiscipline such as the eternal skeletons," he adds.

For all these reasons, the socialist team is going to request the urgent appearance of the mayor "in the common house of Teguise, its plenary hall, to offer convincing explanations about his actions."
