The Socialist Group in the Arrecife City Council has demanded that the mayor, Yonathan de León, act immediately to guarantee the safety of municipal sports facilities, many of which are in a worrying state of disrepair due to lack of maintenance.

The complaint comes after the fall of a light tower in a municipal pavilion Agapito Reyes Viera de Altavista, an incident that shows the serious risk to which users of these facilities are exposed. “We are talking about a very serious event that, fortunately, did not end in tragedy. What else has to happen for the mayor to assume his responsibility?”, said the socialist councilor Roy González.

The PSOE has also expressed its concern about the fact that, instead of prioritizing the improvement of maintenance in all municipal sports facilities, the City Council has decided to inject more than 1.3 million euros into the concessionaire company of the Argana pavilion, without this having translated into visible improvements so far. “It is difficult to understand that significant public resources are allocated to a company while structural and maintenance deficiencies persist in other facilities. The priority should be to guarantee optimal and safe conditions for sports practice in all municipal spaces”, said González.

In addition, the councilor has focused on the absence of the Councilor for Sports, Elisabeth Merino. “While light towers are falling in the pavilions and athletes train among leaks and damage, the councilor is in Jerez inviting businessmen to the April Fair. It is a lack of respect for the clubs, the users and grassroots sport”, he lamented.

The PSOE of Arrecife demands that the mayor and his government team focus once and for all on what is truly important: the safety and dignity of public services, and especially municipal sports, which is key to the well-being and health of citizens.
