The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has denounced that Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Cabildo, has voted against a motion that asked the Government of the Canary Islands to improve the attention to students in school canteens, with special attention to children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Specific Educational Support Needs (SENA).

The initiative, registered and defended by the Socialist Group, underlines that school canteens are a key space not only to guarantee a balanced diet, but also to promote inclusion, socialization and family reconciliation. In that sense, the motion requested to reinforce the number and training of auxiliary personnel to ensure adequate attention to the diversity of students, especially those who require specific support.

“The reality is that many centers lack sufficient and trained personnel to properly care for all students. And that means that there are children who are not receiving the attention they deserve in a space as essential as the dining room,” said Socialist Councilor Alberto Aguiar.

“We are talking about a violation of rights: the right of children to be treated equally and the right of their families to be able to reconcile their work and personal lives with guarantees. Voting against that is voting against the basics,” Aguiar stated.

From the PSOE they criticize that, "once again, the government group of the Canarian Coalition and Popular Party, with Oswaldo Betancort at the head, has chosen to reject a proposal that responds to a real demand from families and educational communities of the island".

“The least a family can expect is that their child is safe, cared for and accompanied by qualified personnel during the school canteen. Voting against that is voting against equality, inclusion and common sense,” concluded Aguiar.
