The Socialist Group of the Arrecife City Council denounces that the mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has rejected increasing the eligible limit for young people in Arrecife to access the Housing Voucher of the Government of Spain. Thus, the government group formed by PP and CC have rejected a motion presented by the Socialist Group in the plenary session this Wednesday morning to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to raise the eligible rental limit with the Youth Voucher, from the current €600 to €900. The measure sought to adapt to the reality of the real estate market in Arrecife, where long-term rental prices exceed this threshold, preventing young people from accessing this aid.
Cristina Duque pointed out that "Arrecife is the poorest city in all of Spain, but it is also the municipality of Lanzarote where it is most expensive to rent, with prices that do not fall below €900 per month," Duque explained. This situation means that, despite the high demand for rent, being the municipality with the highest demand in the entire State, the young people of Arrecife are left out of the Youth Voucher, since the current limit of €600 is insufficient to cover the real housing costs in the municipality. "What do PP and CC want? To push the youth of Arrecife, who are increasingly economically strangled, to the limit?” Duque said.
Duque highlighted that this disadvantage occurs in comparison with other municipalities on the island, such as Tías, Teguise, Yaiza and San Bartolomé, where rental prices do allow access to the bonus. "The incompetence of this government is preventing young people from benefiting from a measure of the Government of Spain that would alleviate many situations and improve the quality of life of many homes," added the socialist councilor, who stressed that "it is essential that the Government of the Canary Islands raise the income limit so that young people in Arrecife are not excluded from aid that could alleviate the housing crisis that we are going through in the municipality with the largest population," she added.
