The Socialist Group of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has once again denounced "the definitive loss of funds destined for the Alternating Training with Employment (PFAE) projects for 2024", a key opportunity to improve employability on the island that the island government, presided over by Oswaldo Betancort, "has missed for the second time in a row."
"Despite the fact that the Cabildo had the possibility of correcting the initial omission, as stated in the final resolution published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, the inaction of the island government has resulted in the exclusion of Lanzarote from these fundamental aids," the party states.
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, has described this new loss as “a sign of disinterest and lack of responsibility towards the real needs of citizens.” According to González, while other institutions have complied with the necessary procedures to access these subsidies, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has demonstrated an “alarming lack of priorities, neglecting initiatives that promote employment and improve the quality of life of the people of Lanzarote.”
“In previous stages, under the Presidency of María Dolores Corujo, the Cabildo successfully captured and managed these funds, allowing the development of training programs that benefited numerous unemployed people. Now, with Oswaldo Betancort at the helm, Lanzarote not only loses essential resources, but also opportunities for social and economic progress,” González pointed out.
The PSOE criticizes that the current island government "is more focused on secondary aspects and self-promotion than on working to guarantee job and training opportunities." “It is not acceptable that on an island with a high unemployment rate, this type of negligence is allowed. Public management must be at the service of citizens, not of political agendas empty of content,” added the spokesperson.
The Socialist Group demands "immediate explanations from Oswaldo Betancort and forceful measures to correct this dynamic of disinterest. It also urges the government group of the Cabildo to work rigorously so as not to leave Lanzarote out of future calls again, and demands that training and employment become true priorities of island management."
“Training and employment are not an option, they are a necessity. Lanzarote cannot afford a government that acts with its back to the most urgent needs of the citizens,” concludes Ariagona González.
