New Generations of Lanzarote has raised its voice to demand from the Youth area of the Island Council a firm and concrete response to what they consider a historical deficiency on the island: the lack of a Youth Space that allows channeling the concerns, needs and proposals of youth in a structured, modern and useful way.
The president of the youth organization, Ana Hernández, lamented that "the youth of Lanzarote still do not have their own place to learn, participate and grow. "We need much more than specific activities. We need presence, structure and commitment to those who will be the engine of the future," added Hernández.
From NNGG Lanzarote they defend that this Youth Space cannot be limited to being just another recreational center, but must be consolidated as a stable platform that offers young people real tools for their integral development.
Among the proposals put forward, they highlight the incorporation of educational and professional guidance, psychological support and advice on mental health, information resources on housing, employment, scholarships or entrepreneurship, as well as modern, accessible and technologically adapted study areas. In addition, they are committed to the creation of debate and meeting rooms where young people can express themselves freely, share ideas and be heard.
Ana Hernández stressed that other autonomous communities "have demonstrated with similar experiences that this type of spaces function as true engines of participation, generators of opportunities and direct connection points between institutions and youth."
The youth organization has also focused on the situation of the Island Library, which, according to their complaints, has become too small and outdated to meet the demand of the youngest students, especially in key periods such as exams. "We cannot ask young people to study and make an effort if we do not even provide them with a suitable environment to do so," they remarked from NNGG.
For all these reasons, Nuevas Generaciones de Lanzarote urges the Cabildo to assume with political and institutional responsibility the creation of an island Youth Space. An infrastructure that represents the active listening, modernity and real support that the young people of Lanzarote and La Graciosa deserve.
