The president of the Popular Party of Gran Canaria, Australia Navarro, clarified that her party has not criminalized the Government Delegate, Carolina Darias, for the death of 25 immigrants who shipwrecked off the coast of Lanzarote in mid-February. On the other hand, the popular spokesperson in the regional Parliament points out, "what we are convinced of is that she lied after the event" by saying that the vessel surveillance system was working, but did not detect the vessel, when police reports indicate otherwise.
"Since then," says Navarro, Darias "takes refuge in silence so as not to give a credible explanation of what happened that Sunday", so "she must resign, because she lies and hides in order not to assume her responsibility".
Australia Navarro regrets that Darias "only thinks of attacking the PP to avoid taking responsibility and alludes to the tragic nature of the shipwreck to hide her responsibility".
The popular deputy specifies that a report by the Civil Guard indicates that the Comprehensive External Surveillance System (SIVE) did not detect the vessel, "although she said that it worked perfectly".
"Carolina Darias lied", attacked Navarro, who added that "she knew she was lying then and today we all know it". For this reason, the PP deputy says that the delegate "can cling to the position as long as she wants, but that is not going to change the objective fact that she has publicly lied about the circumstances in which the tragic shipwreck occurred".
For the PP spokesperson in Parliament, Carolina Darias's "conduct of falsifying reality and removing herself from public responsibilities" "more than justifies her resignation" although, she insists, "no one blames her for the deaths". Navarro asks the government authority to have "the courage and gallantry" to explain the matter.
