The Popular Party has promoted the presentation of motions in all local corporations in order to achieve institutional recognition of Edmundo González as the elected president of Venezuela and at the same time transmit a message of support to the Venezuelan people, who mobilized at the polls last July and who have since been victims of the strong repression imposed by the Nicolás Maduro regime.
“The situation is certainly dramatic, and the Venezuelan community based on the island is experiencing it from a distance with much pain and concern, and what they also expect from our public institutions is a show of solidarity and support for the popular will for change expressed in the elections of July 28,” says the president of the PP of Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez.
“We share the concern of the international community regarding the political and human rights crisis that the Venezuelan people are experiencing firsthand, and what we will not do is forget and turn our backs on a sister community with which we maintain so many historical and cultural ties,” highlights the leader of the popular Lanzaroteños.
If our local corporations are committed to defending democratic values, says Astrid Pérez, what “we cannot do is remain silent in the face of the oppression and injustices” that are occurring in Venezuela. The initiative appeals to the institutions to “raise their voices in favor of freedom, justice and democracy”, and make a call to the international community to unite in defense of these fundamental principles.
In the motion that the Popular Party has already begun to register in the Cabildo and the town halls of the island, express rejection of the manipulation of the electoral results is included by Maduro, who falsely promised to make the minutes of the polling stations public.
For the Populars, "it is essential that the Government of Spain mobilize in this same sense, in coordination with international organizations, to promote measures that ensure respect for democracy and human rights in Venezuela."
