Five speakers and renowned professionals in the national scene from different specialized fields, such as legal, psychological, social and media, participated this Monday in the IV Conference on Awareness of Gender Violence, which for the fourth year was organized by the Social Welfare area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Center for Equality and Attention to Women (CIAM). In this edition, the theme was focused on the new channels of information and communication, with their advantages and disadvantages.
The conferences were held with the collaboration of the Canary Islands Institute for Equality of the Government of the Canary Islands, within the framework of the Social System for Prevention and Comprehensive Protection of victims of gender violence on the island of Lanzarote for the current year. The accidental president of the Cabildo, Joaquín Caraballo, accompanied by the Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuña, and the island director of the General State Administration in Lanzarote, María Dolores Luzardo, were in charge of inaugurating the conference, which took place on Monday.
The accidental president of the Corporation, Joaquín Caraballo, stressed that the IV Conference "is still an opportunity to strengthen and share experiences and information to better prepare ourselves against this social scourge, which in the 21st century is still very present in our society". At the same time, he congratulated the work carried out by the Center for Equality and Attention to Women (CIAM), "offering support, a ray of hope and guidance to all those women who need it".
Along the same lines was the Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuña, who stressed that for the Cabildo of Lanzarote it has been "an important challenge to maintain these conferences, despite the difficulties, and a satisfaction to be able to celebrate them, as a table for reflection and debate, which helps to better direct social and care policies in this area".
The counselor also wanted to emphasize that "in this area, there have been no cuts because reality prevails", in reference to the 300 women who are cared for in Lanzarote each year by the care resources provided by the Cabildo. Acuña also expressed his satisfaction for the signing of the protocols that the seven municipalities maintain with the State to coordinate all security and prevention actions related to protection.
For her part, the island director of the General State Administration, María Dolores Luzardo, highlighted that "in Lanzarote there are 280 women with active police attention and protection". "Women who are not alone," she said, while pointing out the importance of alerting the competent authorities and prevention services, through 016 or 112, since "of the 33 women victims of gender violence who lost their lives so far this year, only 6 had reported the situation previously".
