The Government of the Canary Islands assures that it requested 10 new judicial units for the community from the Ministry of Justice, of which 3 would be for Lanzarote, but the Ministry maintains that they only received the request for 6 courts, the number of new courts that have finally been authorized.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has already expressed its regret for the decision of the Ministry of Justice to ignore the area of Social Affairs in the courts of Arrecife. Precisely this Friday, the visit of the president of the autonomous government, Adán Martín, to the capital of the island is scheduled, to inaugurate the new court building on the island, which began operating about two months ago.
In the request letter sent last October by the Deputy Minister of Justice and Security of the Canary Islands Government, Francisco Javier Díaz Brito to the Ministry, the request for three new courts for the island was included, Mixed, Criminal and Social, the latter would have opened its doors in December 2006, while the Criminal and Mixed, would begin to function in June. Only the Mixed and Criminal have been granted, which will finally begin to function in June and December, respectively.
Díaz Brito has denied the statement sent by the Ministry in which it is stated that the state "has limited itself to including the number of units requested" by the Canarian Executive. According to the Deputy Minister, that statement is "totally false". The proposal sent to the Director General of Relations with the Administration of Justice, Ricardo Bodas, demanded the creation of four judicial units in Tenerife, three in Gran Canaria and the three in Lanzarote.
