The Minister of the Presidency of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Miguel Ruano, has announced that "there will be no classes tomorrow in any school or institute in the Canary Islands, whether public, private or subsidized, as a civil protection measure."

Likewise, Ruano has confirmed in an urgent press conference convened to explain the Executive's measures in the face of the 'Red Alert' decreed by the Meteorological Agency for the western islands and areas of Gran Canaria, that there will be no classes at the University of La Laguna either. In the afternoon, the Rectorate of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has also decided to suspend classes on Monday, despite the "somewhat less negative forecasts expected in the north of the Island".

With regard to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Minister stated that the suspension of classes is "precautionary, given the unknown evolution of the adverse phenomenon". [The State Meteorological Agency forecasts wind gusts of up to 70 km/hour on Lanzarote on Sunday night and up to 90 km/hour on Monday->http://www.aemet.es/es/eltiempo/prediccion/avisos?w=mna&p=6591].

Ruano insists on the need for the population to take all kinds of precautionary measures in the face of the arrival, starting at 22:00 hours in La Palma, Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife, of winds that could range between 130 and 170 kilometers per hour, while in Gran Canaria they will make their appearance from 24:00 hours.

The Minister also asked the population not to leave their homes unless it is necessary, and recommended the removal of objects that could fall, such as awnings or flowerpots.

In addition, it will be necessary to take extreme precautions when traveling by road and stay away from fences, scaffolding, trees or cranes, without forgetting to avoid the proximity of coasts, docks and beaches given the impossibility of predicting the presence of waves that could hit or drag citizens.

Finally, Ruano recalled that calls to the Emergency Coordination Center (Cecoes) 1-1-2 may only be made in case of emergencies, so citizens should use 012 to request information, in addition to staying tuned to the news that may be offered by the media.

Parliament

The President of Parliament, Antonio Castro, has decided to call off the plenary session that the Regional Chamber had planned to hold this Monday, starting at 11:30 am.

Castro's decision, consulted by telephone with the rest of the members of the Bureau and the Board of Spokespersons, is motivated by the civil protection recommendations decreed by the Regional Government in the face of the 'red alert' decreed by the Meteorological Agency.

The fact that the strong winds, of 130 to 170 kilometers per hour, could force the closure of several airports, plus the Executive's recommendation to restrict inter-island transfers as much as possible, would have prevented two-thirds of the deputies from attending the plenary session.
