The Lanzarote Council has requested administrative cooperation with the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Canary Islands Government to draft and execute the water sanitation and purification project in La Graciosa.

Likewise, the first Corporation also urges the regional Executive to ensure that said inter-administrative cooperation is also effective for the processing of any authorizations, enabling titles or environmental assessment procedures that may be necessary, with the aim of proceeding to eliminate those environmental impacts that currently occur in La Graciosa.

The Lanzarote Council's Environment Councilor, Samuel Martín, indicates that "this cooperation between administrations will allow us to speed up the steps to finalize these important works, which have been stopped since 2018."

"It is extremely important," adds Martín, "to put the sanitation pipelines and wastewater treatment into operation as soon as possible to definitively put an end to the continuous water shortage problems suffered by the residents of La Graciosa and the discharge of fecal water, which poses a serious environmental risk."

The Council regrets that during the past legislature, the regional Executive did not advance in the execution of these works, which are part of the Action Plan for the improvement of infrastructures of the Integral Water Cycle of Lanzarote and La Graciosa prepared by the Council, which includes the renovation and improvement of the distribution network, as well as the realization of research surveys for the installation of a portable water desalination plant in Caleta de Sebo, as a contingency measure in the event of possible breakdowns.
