
The Cabildo has launched this Tuesday a second emergency shelter to welcome homeless people, after the 53 places enabled in the first one have already been covered. This new resource has been installed in the sports hall of the Blas Cabrera Felipe Institute, while the other is located in the Arrecife Sports City, where
The new facilities have the capacity to accommodate thirty people and can be expanded to reach fifty, which would mean doubling the beds that existed until this Tuesday.
The implementation of this new reception resource has been carried out by the Security and Emergency Consortium and the Red Cross will also be in charge of its management. Regarding the feeding of the people welcomed, it will be the responsibility of the Social Services of the Cabildo, through the contracting of the corresponding catering service.
"Homeless people to comply with confinement"
The Minister of Social Welfare, Marcos Bergaz, has expressed his gratitude for the immediate response of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, which has made available to the Cabildo the facilities of Blas Cabrera Felipe, "and those that we may need in the future".
For her part, the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, has expressed her "satisfaction" for "the Institution's capacity to respond to the problem of homeless people maintaining confinement when, precisely, they lack the most basic thing: a place to live."
"Our people are stepping up to the plate in circumstances of extreme pressure and in this case they are demonstrating it again: the Security and Emergency Consortium has set up a new accommodation resource in a matter of hours that will allow us, if necessary, to double the capacity to welcome homeless people," Corujo concluded.
