The Lanzarote Island Council will hold, on July 9th, at 5:00 PM, at the Monument to the Farmer, a new participation table within the process of elaborating the Special Plan for the Protected Landscape of La Geria (PEPP). The meeting will serve to present the content of the Progress Document and the Strategic Environmental Study, currently in the public information phase, and to resolve the doubts of the different sectors involved.
This event is part of the participatory process promoted by the island institution to ensure that farmers, winemakers, residents, landowners, and groups linked to La Geria are aware of the document's content and can make any contributions they deem appropriate during the period for submitting objections, as established by the administrative procedure currently underway.
The president of the Lanzarote Island Council, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasizes that “La Geria deserves a transparent and participatory process. We want those who live, work, and maintain this unique landscape to know the content of the Plan firsthand and have all the necessary information to participate with guarantees. The protection of this space can only be built by listening to those who are part of it”.
For his part, the Minister of Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, points out that “these tables allow us to explain the scope of the document in detail and accompany citizens during the public exhibition period. Our goal is that anyone interested can know how the territory is organized and present the proposals they consider appropriate within the procedure”.
The Progress of the Special Plan proposes a specific organization for the Protected Landscape of La Geria with the aim of preserving its landscape, environmental, agricultural, and cultural values. Among other measures, it establishes different areas of protection, recognizes the role of winemaking as an essential element for landscape conservation, and organizes existing population centers, also incorporating the corresponding Strategic Environmental Study.
