The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved this Monday the execution of the actions contemplated in the project of improvements of the infrastructures and the integral system of fire protection (PCI) in the Environmental Complex of Zonzamas', a key investment to modernize and reinforce the facilities linked to waste management on the island.
With a budget amounting to 10,410,967.54 euros, the project includes strategic interventions to respond to the requirements of the environmental inspections of the Integrated Environmental Authorization (AAI), as well as improve the operational safety of the Complex after the fire registered in May 2024.
The actions include, among others, the construction of a unloading bay, the adaptation of the crushing area, the paving of roads, the expansion of leachate and rainwater collection networks, improvements in the fire detection and extinguishing system, and the installation of a new torch and a more modern electrical generator module, efficient and equipped with automatic analysis and regulation systems.
The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, emphasizes that "Zonzamas needs a structural transformation that guarantees a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly waste management. This project is a priority not only due to regulatory requirements, but also due to environmental responsibility with the island and with future generations."
From the Waste Area it is recalled that the Monitoring Commission of the management contract of the Environmental Complex of Zonzamas already reported favorably on the execution of this project last March. Likewise, the Cabildo has requested financing from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands to co-finance this important action.
A safer and more sustainable management model
The project not only corrects deficiencies detected in environmental inspections, but also improves the organization, safety and control of waste, reduces dust and volatile emissions, and prepares the facilities of the Zonzamas Complex to face future emergencies with greater guarantees.
In this sense, the Councilor for Waste, Domingo Cejas, highlights that "these actions represent a decisive step to move towards a safer and more sustainable management model. Zonzamas is a key infrastructure for the island and we must provide it with the necessary tools to function effectively, minimizing risks and improving its environmental impact."
Cejas adds that "the commitment of the Cabildo is clear: to improve the waste treatment system with a focus on innovation, prevention and strict compliance with environmental regulations" and concludes that "one of the first actions we will carry out, with own funds from the Island Corporation, will be the improvement of the integral fire protection system."
