The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the Urban Agenda of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, a strategic plan that defines the path towards a balanced, sustainable urban development that respects the environment of both islands.
This ambitious project, led by Vice President Jacobo Medina and coordinated by the Planning and Project Coordination Unit, "reaffirms the commitment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote to the well-being of its inhabitants and the preservation of the natural and cultural values of the territory."
"The Urban Agenda represents our commitment to a more sustainable, safe, and accessible future for everyone in Lanzarote and La Graciosa," said Jacobo Medina. "This document not only establishes a strategic framework to face current challenges, such as climate change and sustainability, but also advocates for social and territorial cohesion that strengthens our natural and cultural environment," he added.
The Urban Agenda aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda of the United Nations. Through ten strategic objectives, it seeks to address critical issues for territorial development, including land management, sustainable resource management, mobility and the urban economy, digital innovation, and access to housing. These objectives are aimed at improving the quality of life of the citizens of both islands and ensuring inclusive and resilient economic growth over time.
"This step we are taking in the Cabildo of Lanzarote is the beginning of a concrete action plan that involves all administrations and sectors of society. We want to work hand in hand with our citizens to build a development model that respects our identity, our roots, and the values of sustainability that César Manrique projected on our island."
The Urban Agenda "is not only an action plan, but a declaration of intent to ensure harmonious and equitable urban development, ensuring that Lanzarote and La Graciosa can face the challenges of the 21st century while maintaining their beauty and uniqueness."
"The Cabildo of Lanzarote, with the support of the seven councils of the island, will continue working to implement this plan, ensuring that each project contributes to a development model aligned with the principles of sustainability and common welfare," they conclude.
