The Cabildo approves aid for students with specific educational support needs

The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote has approved the regulatory bases that will govern the future calls for the new NEAE Student Scholarships, a line of subsidies promoted by the Department of Education aimed at reinforcing attention to students with specific educational support needs (NEAE) and recognized disability certificates in the educational centers of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

This is a pioneering initiative, as it is the first time that the island institution has launched this type of aid, which will be directed directly to educational centers dependent on the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands with enrolled NEAE students.

After its approval by the Governing Council, the bases must be ratified by the Plenary Session of the Corporation and subsequently submitted to a public information period of 30 business days. If no claims are filed during this period, they will be considered definitively approved, at which point the corresponding call for subsidies may be approved.

The objective of these subsidies is to provide economic resources that allow the centers to develop actions, projects, and interventions that contribute to more complete and adapted attention to the needs of these students, thus promoting more inclusive and equitable education.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted the importance of this measure to advance in equal opportunities in the educational field. “For the first time, we are launching a specific line of aid to support students with special educational needs, making it easier for centers to have more resources to offer comprehensive and personalized attention. Inclusive education must be a priority, and from the Cabildo, we want to contribute decisively so that no student sees their opportunities limited by a lack of means,” he pointed out.

For their part, the Minister of Education, Ascensión Toledo, explained that these scholarships are born after listening to the demands of the educational community and detecting needs that until now did not have a specific response from the island administration. “These grants will allow educational centers to more effectively address the needs of students with recognized disabilities (NEAE), financing fundamental resources and services for their educational and personal development. We are committed to a model that facilitates management for the centers and directly impacts the well-being and inclusion of the students,” she stated.

The subsidies may be used for the acquisition of books and teaching materials, complementary activities during school hours, consumable materials, sports clothing, absorbent garments for hygiene, resources for the development of communication and feeding areas, technical aids, and other expenses of a similar nature that contribute to the adequate schooling of the beneficiary students.

Educational centers will be responsible for processing the applications and managing the granted funds based on the number of enrolled students with a recognized disability certificate, ensuring that the resources are allocated to actions that directly improve their educational support.
