Civil Guard officers located this Monday the lifeless body of the regional parliamentarian of the PIL Juan Antonio Betancor Brito, 30 years old, on a hillside of the Famara massif, northwest of the island of Lanzarote, after his family reported his disappearance last Saturday.

Municipal sources confirmed to Efe that in the early hours of this Monday a Civil Guard helicopter located the vehicle of the deceased deputy and, a few meters from it, the body of the parliamentarian who was thrown out.

The sources indicated that at this time they are waiting for the judicial authority and the forensic doctor to appear in the area to proceed with the removal of the body, and that "nobody explains what could have happened".

Sources close to the family confirmed that Betancor Brito was last seen around 4:00 p.m. last Saturday, in a restaurant in Arrecife, where he had lunch with a colleague from his party, the PIL.

Deputy Betancor Brito, a native of the Lanzarote municipality of Haría, belongs to the mixed group and acceded to the regional Parliament on January 28, 2004, following the imprisonment of parliamentarian Dimas Martín, who was convicted of the crimes of prevarication and bribery.

Betancor Brito held a degree in Geography and History from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, had a master's degree in Environmental Management and worked as an island coordinator and tutoring technician for rural program associations, as well as a local development technician for the Association for Rural Development of Lanzarote (Aderlan).

His political career began in 2001 as president of the PIL's young nationalists, a position for which he was re-elected the following year.

Since November 2003 he was president of the local committee of the PIL in Haría, and was also a member of the national executive committee and the national political council of the PIL.
