In its last session, this Monday, June 23, the Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approved the draft regulatory framework for the granting of subsidies under a competitive tendering system, to support the work of non-profit entities based in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, which carry out their work in both island territories.

According to the Councilor of the Biosphere Reserve, Samuel Martín, the projects that are financed "must contribute to the conservation of biological and cultural diversity and economic and social development in the Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote, with the criteria of environmental, social and economic sustainability that mark sustainable development policies at a global, European and national level."

The procedure for granting subsidies will be that of competitive tendering, whereby the concession is made through the comparison and evaluation of the applications submitted, in light of the established criteria and the limit of available economic credit.

According to the draft bases, pending its final approval, the actions that practically develop the Sustainable Development Goals may be subject to subsidy: awareness and dissemination initiatives on the Biosphere Reserve in accordance with the MaB Strategy; actions that contribute to the research, conservation and/or monitoring of terrestrial or marine biodiversity and ecosystems; proposals focused on the conservation and maintenance of the island landscape; actions that favor the restoration of degraded spaces and ecosystems; projects that promote the sustainable and/or circular economy, those that promote land stewardship and those that contribute to the conservation and environmental monitoring of soils.
