The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, has urgently requested the Island Council of Lanzarote to launch a family respite center in the town of Guatiza, a fundamental social resource that, in the opinion of the City Council, cannot be delayed any longer.
The consistory recalls that the Teguise City Council received the transfer of a house and a plot of 31,200 square meters located in the town of Guatiza. This property will be assigned to the Island Council of Lanzarote with the aim of building a family respite center on it, a priority infrastructure to respond to the growing care needs of numerous families in the municipality.
“The well-being of our neighbors cannot wait any longer because this center is not a luxury, it is a necessity, and from the Teguise City Council we have done everything possible since we have the space and the political commitment and now we demand that the Cabildo act responsibly and launch this project immediately,” said Mayor Olivia Duque.
Duque stressed that this type of social infrastructure is essential to guarantee the care of dependent people and offer their families the rest and support they deserve. We cannot continue to delay the construction of these resources in the municipality, since Teguise, being the largest on the island, should have a family respite center. Once this first center is accepted, it is necessary to urgently demand the creation of a second respite or day center for the elderly because the municipality needs real and effective services.
In terms of territorial planning, Teguise has advanced steadily and constantly, always putting people and their needs at the center of its management. Currently, the municipality is consolidated as the place chosen for the construction of the second island residence for the elderly in Lanzarote, which implies a greater responsibility to guarantee adequate services and resources for its residents and visitors.
In this sense, the City Council is already assessing the planning of new spaces in other locations in the municipality where future residences and family respite centers could be located, with the aim of expanding and strengthening the social care network throughout the territory.
The Teguise City Council reiterates its willingness to collaborate institutionally, but also warns that it will continue to firmly demand what corresponds to the municipality, especially in terms of social services, “because every day that passes without this center being a reality is one more day of burden for many families who already give everything for their loved ones.”
