The world celebrates International Senior Citizens' Day on October 1, although Yaiza anticipated its celebration last Sunday to encourage the participation of residents from all the towns who attended the municipal event. One hundred people were at the Yaiza Mill enjoying an afternoon of fellowship enlivened by the performance of traditional games, the audiovisual memory of fun and exciting moments experienced during the activities organized by the City Council and, above all, by the good humor that characterizes the southern senior group.

Yaiza paid tribute to Nicolás Ramos, a resident who still runs the Colacho store that his father opened decades ago, an old-fashioned business from the 50s, located in the town of Yaiza, which served residents by offering food and other products at times when the families' economy was not buoyant. "There was no money and the people of the town came to buy and my father trusted them, but there was seriousness and honesty, and people sooner or later fulfilled their commitments," says Colacho.

The store was also a neighborhood meeting point for stories and laughter, and it still is, because despite the appearance of large stores and surfaces and other priorities, Colacho continues to open the store from eight in the morning to one in the afternoon to sell and talk: "here we start to dialogue, have a laugh and have a good time".

The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, emphasizes that "there are no words to thank our mothers, fathers and grandparents for all the love, affection, teachings and values transmitted so that we are better people, and what to say about their effort and sacrifice of many years to build a municipality and an island of progress and well-being".

The Councilor for Senior Citizen Care of Yaiza, Águeda Cedrés, guarantees "the continuity of recreational, educational and sports activities aimed at the elderly, because we understand that it is the best way to help build a society for all ages through the promotion of favorable environments that avoid unwanted loneliness. Our seniors are happy with the program of activities and that encourages us to continue and improve".

The City Council thanks the municipal staff for all the attention they give to their elders and also makes public its gratitude to the monitors of entities that work with Yaiza in the organization and development of activities designed for older residents.
