To mark Rural Women's Day, this Wednesday, October 15, the San Bartolomé City Council paid tribute to several female residents of the municipality for their life's work and dedication over the years to the primary sector, one of the central pillars of the local economy and identity.
The First Deputy Mayor of San Bartolomé, Marlene Romero, representing Mayor Isidro Pérez, and the Councillor for Equality, Mónica de León, have congratulated three women farmers on behalf of all the women in the municipality: Teresita de Jesús Acuña Tejera, Leonor Díaz Caraballo, and Reyes Pérez Díaz. All of them reflect the values that characterize the history of San Bartolomé and represent the strong roots in the rural environment of the municipality, in this case linked to cheese making, viticulture, and gofio.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, believes that "this tribute is not only a gesture of gratitude; it is also an act of justice." He emphasizes that "these women have worked for years with effort and dignity," and affirms that with this recognition "we want to remember that their work does not go unnoticed and that they are a fundamental part of the history of San Bartolomé."
In this regard, the Councilor for Equality, Mónica de Léon, insists that "this tribute is a way of recognizing the role that so many women have had—and continue to have—in sustaining our agricultural and livestock environment." "We want new generations to know their stories, be inspired by them, and understand that equality is also cultivated from the land," she emphasizes.
That is why, to capture their experiences, a video starring these residents has been produced, which includes their vision of rural work, how they balanced it with caring for their families, and what it meant to contribute valuable economics and knowledge transfer in their daily lives.
