The San Bartolomé City Council has completed the comprehensive restoration work of the signage of the hiking trails of the municipality, including the GR-131 section and the local network of trails, a key action to improve the safety, accessibility and experience of residents and visitors.

This intervention responds to the conclusions gathered in the evaluation report of the trail network, which detected a widespread deterioration of signage and waymarking due to the passage of time and environmental conditions, with illegible panels, damaged or missing markers, and the need for replacement in several sections. Likewise, this action responds to the growing demand for hiking tourism, a booming segment that seeks experiences linked to nature, landscape, and local heritage.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, has highlighted that “with this action we respond to a real need of the municipality, improving a fundamental resource for both our residents and for those who visit us. We are committed to a development model that values our natural environment, guaranteeing its conservation and enjoyment in optimal conditions.” In addition, he added that “hiking has consolidated itself as one of the main motivations for those who visit us, and from the City Council we want to meet that demand with quality infrastructure.”

For his part, the Councilor for Tourism, Mamadou Yero Sy Cissé, has pointed out that “San Bartolomé's network of trails is a top-level tourist asset, combining landscape, heritage, and tradition. The complete renovation of the signage reinforces our active and sustainable tourism offer, improving orientation, safety, and interpretation of the environment”. In this regard, he stressed that “we continue to firmly commit to trail tourism as a strategic axis to diversify the offer and attract a visitor increasingly interested in authentic and environmentally respectful experiences”.

The technical report evidenced the need to act especially in the beaconing and interpretive signage, essential elements to guide users and preserve the natural environment, avoiding negative impacts derived from disorientation or transit outside the established routes.

The network of trails of San Bartolomé, composed of seven routes that run through enclaves as unique as the historic center, El Jable or La Geria, constitutes a strategic resource for the municipality, both from a tourist and cultural and environmental point of view.

With the completion of these works, the City Council reaffirms "its commitment to the continuous improvement of its infrastructures and the enhancement of natural heritage, consolidating San Bartolomé as a reference destination for hiking in Lanzarote".
