The Cabildo de Lanzarote has presented the project for the installation of a pet crematorium in the Zonzamas Environmental Complex. This was reported by the highest island body at a press conference this Thursday, December 30. Currently there is no facility, public or private, that carries out this activity on the island.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, assured during her presentation that this need has been identified "because on the island there are more than 51,000 registered dogs and cats and the lack of public facilities of this type".
"In Lanzarote there is one pet for every three inhabitants, which alone justifies the measure we have adopted. As is natural, lasting and unconditional bonds of affection are created between people and companion animals, so that, when they die, people demand an adequate farewell, and that is what we want to achieve with this future cremation service," says the president.
On the other hand, the Minister of Waste, Hugo Delgado, explained that the Zonzamas Environmental Complex has a crematorium oven, but designed for large animals, so it is not suitable for the cremation of pets. This oven is not in operation, so our idea, according to the Minister, "is to adapt or make this crematorium oven compatible for pets".
After the drafting of the project, the Waste area carries out the pertinent actions to start up the Pet Crematorium, "in the shortest possible time". "Very soon, pet owners will be able to say goodbye to them at the time of their departure and keep their ashes as a souvenir in a suitable urn, if they wish," concluded Delgado.
