Animal Crematory

The only animal crematorium on the island, which belongs to a private company, has closed its doors after receiving a sealing order from the Arrecife City Council.

The facilities had been operating in the capital for five years and the City Council has not explained the reason for adopting this decision now. In this regard, they have only confirmed to La Voz that the area of “Classified Activities had required the relevant documentation on several occasions and they did not present it”, although they have not specified what “documentation” it is.

For their part, the company denies that they have not delivered documents required by the City Council, and state that they are “waiting” for the City Council to allow them to open again.

According to the institution, when it notified the company that they were going to seal the crematorium, “they responded with a voluntary cessation” of activity.

“They have presented allegations to the City Council report. The technicians are now processing them, but they cannot provide more information because it is a private company. It will only be public once there is a decree,” they point out.

They also explain that the issue was taken to the last Plenary by Classified Activities, “which is the one with the power to seal the establishment”, although “in the end they closed voluntarily before sealing it.”

The measure implies that there is currently no animal crematorium operating on the island, so people facing the death of their pets would have to take them to the Zonzamas landfill. The machinery to enable a public crematorium was installed there a decade ago, but it is not working, so the only option is the landfill, with what this implies for families who lose their pets.
