Podemos Lanzarote supports the “coherence and responsibility” demonstrated by the Classified Activities area of the Cabildo by not authorizing the “Isla de los Volcanes” dirt rally, which, according to reports from the Government of the Canary Islands, threatened more than 85 protected species, four of them in danger of extinction and seven classified as vulnerable.
“Lanzarote needs a public debate on the impact of this type of activity on territorial fragility and biodiversity to establish an island position consistent with the new ecological challenges,” says the purple formation.
In this regard, it should be noted that the Biodiversity Service of the Government of the Canary Islands issued up to two reports against the holding of the sporting event, one of them after the organization of the event decided last week to modify its route, which crossed the heart of the jable in the middle of the nesting season for birds in danger of extinction.
Following the criteria of the Biodiversity Service of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Environment area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote also issued a resolution determining that it was not possible to ensure that there would be no impact on the island's biodiversity. However, Podemos Lanzarote clarifies that it was up to the Classified Activities department of the corporation to decide whether the test was authorized or not.
In this sense, and as it could not be otherwise, both Podemos Lanzarote and the Minister of the Environment of the Cabildo, Elena Solís, support the technical criteria of the officials and technicians of the regional and island administration, and emphasize that “in no way is it a political or arbitrary decision” but rather a technical, legal and scientific position.
Likewise, Podemos Lanzarote regrets that, “in the face of the devastating reports from the Government of the Canary Islands, there were those who insisted on giving false hope to the organizers of the event, causing them great harm.”
“Compliance with current legislation is non-negotiable and cannot be subject to mediation and subjective interpretation, and must always be above particular and partisan interests,” they state from the formation, from where they show their firm support for Elena Solís and express their gratitude to the environmental and scientific groups that raised their voices to demand that the island's biodiversity be respected.
