The Tourism Councilor of the Yaiza City Council, Evaristo García, traveled last Friday to Mogán, in the south of Gran Canaria, to attend the Blue Flag award ceremony that was recently granted by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to the coast of Playa Blanca.

"It is a source of pride and great joy that Playa Blanca has repeated the achievement of a blue flag", said the southern mayor at the conclusion of the event, "since it shows that the correct steps are being taken in the right direction. A Blue Flag from the European Union is an award of the highest level, which rewards the management of our coastline and supports the development model of our main tourist center."

The existence of a Blue Flag in Playa Blanca recognizes the good quality of the waters; the safety and hygienic conditions of its services and facilities and also the educational campaigns carried out by local authorities to raise awareness among citizens about the advantages of correct use and conservation of the environmental complex. Its presence also confirms that the cleaning services work effectively, that the beach has access for the disabled, and lifeguard services for emergencies. In total, Playa Blanca has complied with the 25 requirements, some of an imperative nature and others simply advisable, which determine the granting of such a precious award by the European Foundation for Environmental Education.

"In any case," concluded Evaristo García, "we are going to continue working so that next summer a Blue Flag can shine again in Playa Blanca."

In Yaiza there are this summer two Blue Flags of the European Union: one in Playa Blanca and a second in Puerto Calero. In 2008, a total of 390 Blue Flags will fly on Spanish beaches.
