Oswaldo Betancort assumes the presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. In an act celebrated this Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the highest island institution, the nationalist takes over from the socialist María Dolores Corujo, who was president for the last four years.
The Coalición Canaria candidacy was the most voted in the elections of May 28, by a difference of 69 votes with respect to the socialist, and converted the former mayor of Teguise into the president of the first island institution.
The electoral results gave the list headed by Betancort eight councilors; to the PSOE, eight; to the Popular Party, four; to Nueva Canarias, two; and to Vox, one. The agreement sealed between the nationalists and the popular to distribute the municipalities of the island and the Cabildo, crowns Betancort as the new island president, since the absolute majority is achieved with twelve seats.
Oswaldo Betancort assumes the presidency as a member of Coalición Canaria after having governed in Teguise for 14 years and being a parliamentarian in the last four. The numbers make it possible for the far-right formation Vox not to be part of the island's government, although it is part of the plenary, with a councilor.
In his first speech after being invested as president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort has announced that the priority of the new island government will be the development of social policies, giving the importance they deserve to the organizations of the third sector and developing concerts with all of them.
He has also pointed out as objectives the creation of a parking lot in the Doctor Molina Orosa Hospital and the implementation of a housing plan, as well as the development of a new island hospital and a new sports city.
Betancor has assured that he will be assertive with the new Government of the Canary Islands that will be presided over by the general secretary of his party, Fernando Clavijo, who will demand that the island be provided with the necessary investments in infrastructure.
