NC supports La Graciosa's claims against the closure of Playa Lambra

"Unfortunately, this type of unilateral decisions by state agencies are frequent in the Canary Islands, as they lack information about the place and a lack of sensitivity regarding the issues that concern the islands," says Jiménez

The candidate for Mayor of Teguise for Nueva Canarias, Dr. Fernando Jiménez, visited the island of La Graciosa this Sunday with the intention of conveying his party's support for the claim that residents maintain for the closure of the Playa Lambra road.

The Local Committee of NC joins the demand of the Graciosa society that "has strongly opposed this unilateral decision by the state authorities, who have ignored the consideration of maintaining a historical route for the resident society".

“Unfortunately, this type of unilateral decisions by state agencies are frequent in the Canary Islands, as they lack information about the place and a lack of sensitivity regarding the issues that concern the islands”, comments Fernando Jiménez.

Similarly, the Canaristas believe that "La Graciosa maintains a lack of legal certainty due to its dual status as an inhabited island belonging to a municipality and a Natural Park".

“The Graciosa society lives in genuine uncertainty as no simplified and homogeneous bases are established to regulate everything concerning the island”, says Jiménez, who considers a “better clarification of the current regulations and a management and coordination table between all the administrations involved and organized civil society” to be appropriate.

NC points out that "the model it defends for the eighth island is based on environmental and economic sustainability. An Eco-Island that is at the forefront of sustainable development and energy sovereignty". To this end, they consider, “the approval and updating of the planning and management plans that concern La Graciosa is essential, and a firm commitment by the Teguise City Council and the Island Council for an orderly change of the current economic and environmental model”.

Must-see visit

The visit of candidate Fernando Jiménez also served to greet friends and acquaintances from La Graciosa, where he worked as a doctor between 1986 and 1987, and as head of the Basic Health Zone of Teguise for 16 years.

Thus, he went to the houses of Doña Margarona, Doña Enriqueta and Doña Rosario, "where he enjoyed conversations about the demands of the resident population and the transformation of the Graciosa society", explain from NC.

“La Graciosa has been the cradle of brave and fighting women. An example of a well-understood matriarchy where women take center stage in island life”, said Fernando Jiménez.
