Nueva Canarias has questioned the work that the Arrecife City Council has started to renew the grass and gardening in the main roundabouts of the city and has asked the Council to seek "more sustainable and economical alternatives." And although it states that it "applauds and congratulates" the intervention in the roundabouts, they consider that the grass plates should not be used again.
"The city unfortunately has many examples of failure in its implementation, the most alarming ones we have in the Parque Islas Canarias and Parque Temático, where the green has been left to die," the formation denounces. In a statement, NC recalls that the grass in Arrecife "needs laborious maintenance", including "frequent pruning, large amounts of water, fertilizers, etc." Something that represents a significant cost for its maintenance and that "does not make much sense in one of the places in Spain with more hours of sunshine, especially when there are other options."
For this reason, Nueva Canarias asks that other alternatives be chosen, such as "using rofe, something very ours and the envy of other places for its great decorative value." The party recalls that this material is present in many roundabouts in Lanzarote and "marks a characteristic stamp of our landscape and commitment to the environment, since the amount in its maintenance is minimal."
In addition, it points out that "other alternatives to grass and with a minimum cost in its maintenance and with little water are broadleaf turfgrasses, mouse ear, dwarf clover and Chinese jasmine", since "they all need little pruning and have a lot of resistance to trampling".
