The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has once again expressed his deep displeasure over the continuous water supply cuts that continue to occur in the homes of Lanzarote and which, in a special way, have affected different neighborhoods of the capital in recent days, coinciding with the Christmas week.
The first city official has demanded that Canal Gestión Lanzarote, the company holding the concession for the island's integrated water cycle, guarantee a stable and continuous supply, after prolonged service interruptions were recorded without prior warning to the population so they could take preventive measures.
Among the areas most affected by these cuts is Argana Alta, the most populous neighborhood in all of Lanzarote, with over 11,000 residents, a figure similar to the sum of the inhabitants registered in the municipalities of Haría and Tinajo. Approximately 18 percent of the island's population resides in this area, which further exacerbates the impact of these incidents
Yonathan de León recalls that Arrecife concentrates 42 percent of the resident population of Lanzarote, with nearly 72,000 inhabitants, a figure equivalent to the sum of the residents of Teguise, San Bartolomé, and Tías. Furthermore, he emphasizes that most buildings in the capital lack cisterns or water storage systems, leaving many families in a particularly vulnerable situation in the event of any service interruption.
The mayor has stated that he **shares the anger and concern expressed by numerous residents of Argana,** who have suffered several consecutive and unannounced power outages in their homes during these special dates. The Arrecife City Council insists on the need for the concessionary company to inform in due time of any planned interruption so that families can organize themselves and minimize the harm.
De León recalled that at the beginning of the current term, he held a meeting with the heads of Canal Gestión, after the delicate situation of the island's water production and distribution system became public. A public system that, according to the Water Consortium, has undergone emergency interventions in recent months in both the networks and the desalination plants, with the installation of new membranes and the commissioning of new infrastructure.
However, despite these announced actions, the mayor regrets that in the final days of 2025, repeated supply cuts occurred again in Argana and other areas of Arrecife, without prior communication to residents, a situation he considers unacceptable and which demands an immediate response from the concessionaire company
