The socialist parliamentarian for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz, has requested from the Government of the Canary Islands collaboration to unblock the launch of the new public transport service in Lanzarote, pending tender as we approach the third year of the mandate of the Government of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, formed by Canarian Coalition (CC) and Popular Party (PP).

This petition has taken place through a question in the parliamentary Commission of Public Works, Housing and Mobility held this last Thursday, where the situation of public transport on the island was addressed with the regional counselor, Pablo Rodríguez (CC).

During the same, Bergaz highlighted the need for its improvement and the adoption of additional measures by the regional executive, “as Lanzarote is the island that presents the greatest dependence on private vehicles in the Canary Islands, a community in which 69% of people use the car as the main option for their displacements”.

He also pointed out that, “despite advances such as free bus travel, implemented on the island in the summer of 2022 under the presidency of María Dolores Corujo in the Cabildo, or the launch of the transport bonus during his first legislature as a councilor; Lanzarote needs a real revolution in its public transport that allows connecting all population centers and improving the frequency, reliability, and comfort of the service”.

The deputy also recalled that "the free bus service has led to an exponential growth in the number of public transport users on the island, increasing from 5 million passengers in 2022 to more than 8 million in 2025". This increase evidences the growing demand and reinforces the need for a broader, more efficient service adapted to new mobility needs.

He also highlighted that his intervention coincides with the culmination of the preferential stop of Costa Teguise, “a project for which we obtained funding in the previous term with the achievement of more than three million euros of community funds directed to this infrastructure and the acquisition of new buses”.

“We are glad -he indicated- that the current island government continued the roadmap of this necessary investment, but it is fundamental that this infrastructure be accompanied by a new island transport service awaiting a tender that does not arrive.”

At this point, Bergaz urged the Government of the Canary Islands to collaborate with the Cabildo to move forward with the new public transport contract: “provide technical and legal support to the Cabildo to overcome unfulfilled announcements and advance towards an island public transport service that meets the mobility needs of the island and its citizens, counselor”.

“It is urgent to offer real alternatives that reduce car dependency and improve mobility. Therefore, the involvement of the regional Executive is timely to unblock a tender that, after a thousand days of CC and PP government in the Cabildo, remains unconcretized. I ask you to take an interest in this matter since, in the short term and doing things well, it is the measure that can most contribute to improving public transport in Lanzarote,” concluded the deputy and municipal spokesperson in Teguise.
