The Cabildo de Lanzarote has presented the audiovisual awareness campaign “Normal is diverse”, an initiative framed within the Accessibility and Inclusion Strategy of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. The campaign is articulated through six audiovisual pieces that will be published on the social networks of the island Corporation following a monthly schedule.

The event, held this Friday, March 20, in the Plenary Hall of the Institution, served to publicize an action that responds to a demand raised by social groups, which is to advance in raising awareness among the population as a key element to guarantee real inclusion. The campaign is articulated through six short videos that will be disseminated on social networks and that address different realities linked to disability from a person-centered perspective.

During the presentation, the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, pointed out that this campaign responds to a way of understanding public policies on the island, in which inclusion is not limited to the elimination of physical barriers, but also incorporates the social and human dimension. In this sense, he explained that Lanzarote has developed in recent years a welfare model that places people at the center, generating support networks and opportunities throughout all stages of life.

For his part, the Minister of Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, explained that the campaign starts from a clear idea, which is that accessibility does not depend solely on infrastructure, but is directly linked to social attitude and daily behavior. In this vein, he added that the videos show real situations that often go unnoticed, but that directly condition people's autonomy and participation.

The audiovisual series addresses different areas such as sensory disability, mental health, functional diversity or situations of dependency, placing special emphasis on those realities that are not visible at first glance. The content highlights the existence of social barriers and everyday behaviors that limit basic rights, such as the improper use of adapted spaces or the lack of understanding in the face of certain conditions.

The initiative is part of a broader approach within the Accessibility and Inclusion Strategy, which combines structural interventions with actions aimed at social transformation, understanding that effective inclusion depends as much on the physical environment as on collective behavior.

Protagonists of the campaign

The campaign brings together six real stories that reflect different ways of experiencing disability in Lanzarote. Magdalena focuses on mental health and the right to participate in social life on equal terms; the Magec Tías team shows how sport becomes a space for real inclusion; and Yurena makes visible communication barriers and the importance of sign language to ensure understanding and participation.

Added to these experiences are those of Cristina, who highlights personal effort and the value of support to achieve goals; Gabriel, who demonstrates the impact of the improper use of adapted spaces in daily life; and Angelines, who emphasizes the role of care and invisible support that sustain many realities.
