The Cabildo of Lanzarote has signed an agreement to bring digital payment closer to tourist activity. The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and of the Board of Directors of the Tourist Centers, María Dolores Corujo, the director of Institutional Relations of Mastercard Europe, Nicola Villa, and his counterpart at Cajasiete, José Manuel Garrido, reached an agreement to make this form of payment the preferred one for tourists to access tourist and cultural activities,

Corujo considered that this initiative is "a key step in our strategy towards tourism sustainability and an element that improves our competitiveness as a destination." She also pointed out that it will simplify tourism activity at all levels and in all areas. At the same time, it will allow the Cabildo to "better know who visits the island, their tastes and preferences, their lifestyle and consumption habits; it will provide the appropriate information to offer an individualized response adapted to their needs."

Daniel Nieto, vice president of Government Relations at Mastercard Spain, for his part, highlighted that "our goal is to create a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient tourism industry." Nieto believes that the use of digital payment methods is "key to the comfort and safety of tourists, and allows a person who comes from anywhere in the world to use any service related to tourism quickly, easily and safely." In addition, Mastercard Spain is delighted to work with Lanzarote providing knowledge, data and technology "so that the island can chart the roadmap that helps them design more inclusive and sustainable tourism strategies."

Cajasiete's mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Canary Islands, and projects like this in public-private collaboration "help to improve a key industry for the island of Lanzarote such as the tourism sector," said José Manuel Garrido.

From a strategic point of view, the CEO of the Tourist Centers, Benjamín Perdomo, stressed that "this project will contribute to reducing the Entity's costs, optimizing decision-making and creating new products and services for our clients. In the same way, it will improve our ability to serve them, and for them to identify with us."

The agreement

The new challenges facing cities in terms of tourism sustainability reach all their dimensions: economic, social and environmental. Technology and innovation are the key to creating sustainable strategies and developing initiatives to support citizens and companies affected by the current crisis.

The Tourist Centers continue working to be a reference of innovation in Lanzarote by promoting and accelerating the transformation of the tourist experience based on digital payments. With this transformation, the Cabildo's objective is to make Lanzarote a leading destination in social, economic and environmental sustainability.

For its part, Mastercard, with the participation of Cajasiete, will collaborate in identifying the main spending trends through aggregated and anonymous data, with the aim of optimizing processes and improving the tourist experience.
