The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, received the economist José Carlos Díaz at the island institution to assess a strategic plan with the aim of reactivating the island.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Tourism, Ángel Vázquez, and several representatives of economic sectors such as Susana Pérez from the Lanzarote Tourist Federation, Esther Cabrera from the transport sector, the hotel businessman Héctor Pulido, and Vanesa Frahija from Comisiones Obreras. Díez explained the progress of some of the main lines on which the economic report will be based, in which the economists Miguel Sebastián and Daniel Lacalle are also working.

The economist is scheduled to be on the island for three days, during which he will also visit different strategic points of Lanzarote, rural areas, tourist avenues, towns, as well as the capital.

Create employment in new market niches

“We intend to contribute from the economic team a vision that fits the reality of Lanzarote in Europe and the world. We are facing a global crisis, which will be solved with global responses, such as the one launched by the European Union, and the island must find its place in this new scenario. Our fundamental role is to locate the possibility of creating employment in new market niches, complementing what already exists, and innovating in what is to come,” explained Díez.

The president is satisfied with the work that aims to “address future issues, such as digitization, included in European funds, the green economy, included in the lines of financing aimed at the green economy or the implementation of an effective economic diversification plan so that, together with actors related to Tourism, Lanzarote can have complementary sectors”.

It should be remembered that the economists José Carlos Díez, Miguel Sebastián and Daniel Lacalle have been advising the institution for two months in the search for formulas to overcome the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
