The head of the Popular Party (PP) of Lanzarote in 2019, and still councilor of the Teguise City Council, Jonás Álvarez, has broken away from the party by leading the creation of a new political project, the Primero Teguise party, which has emerged to "alleviate the discontent that exists in the municipality".
Álvarez explained in an interview on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that this formation translates into a municipal group because "the priority we have always had during these years is Teguise and we want it to continue to be so."
"The PP did not want us to be inside the party"
After a year and a half in which both he and other members of the PP were left "orphaned of political formation", the decision arose to create this new group: "We are solely and exclusively focused on Teguise, we don't want anything else, because ours goes from Tahíche upwards", says the still councilor.
Therefore, it is this same commitment to the municipality that supports Álvarez continuing to be part of the Consistory until the next elections in May.
"The PP did not want us to be inside the party and that is why we have taken this step towards creating another one. However, we have a commitment to the residents of the municipality, who were the ones who put us there, therefore we will not leave the City Council", comments the politician, referring to himself and some of his colleagues, who have also broken away from the popular formation to be part of Primero Teguise.
Regarding the resignation from the Popular Party, he states that "it has not yet been carried out, but the formation itself will process it because it is stated in the statutes".
Alone to the City Council
Primero Teguise is made up of 50% of the electoral list that accompanied Álvarez in the past elections, in addition to historical affiliates and other new ones.
Looking ahead to the next elections in May, the politician states that the idea of the group is to "go alone in Teguise", although he acknowledges that he has held meetings and does not rule out "forming some alliance with a view to other institutions, such as the Cabildo".
An alternative to the possible fall of CC
The absolute majority of the Canarian Coalition (CC) reached in the past elections could be in danger this year in Teguise, according to polls.
In that sense, although the councilor says he does not trust these methods, he does know "the discontent that exists among the residents": "We know the abandonment that the municipality has been suffering during these four years, which will be transmitted on the election day itself, and that is what has led us to create Primero Teguise. What you can feel on the street is that CC may lose the majority", concludes Álvarez.
