The Cabildo of Lanzarote has decreed the temporary closure of hunting in the municipality of Haría after the appearance of, at least, a dozen animals that died from possible poisoning in different areas of the north of the island, such as Ye, Máguez or Guinate.
According to initial reports, six dogs have already been found dead, in addition to several cats, among other fauna, which is why this preventive suspension protocol has been immediately activated until the inspection and monitoring work is completed and the facts can be clarified.
The island councilor for Hunting, Samuel Martín, has stressed the importance of acting firmly and responsibly in the face of this type of situation.
“We are coordinating all efforts together with the State security forces, the Civil Guard, the SEPRONA, the local Police, the Cabildo's Environment agents and the Lanzarote Hunting Society to protect the fauna and clarify these regrettable events as soon as possible,” he said.
In parallel, different drives are being carried out in the area with the aim of detecting the possible presence of poison and preventing further incidents.
The hunting suspension decree will be transferred to the Government of the Canary Islands and will remain in force until the competent authorities determine the causes and safety is guaranteed in the area. The Cabildo of Lanzarote is calling for citizen collaboration and asking for extreme caution in the natural spaces of the municipality of Haría.
