Haría declares three days of mourning for the death of former mayor Juan Santana

The northern municipality, where Santana was born, will observe mourning from 12:00 noon this Thursday until noon on Sunday

The extraordinary plenary session of the Haría City Council has decreed mourning for the death of the former mayor Juan Santana, who died in Lanzarote this Thursday morning.

According to La Voz, the northern municipality, where Santana was born, will observe mourning from 12:00 noon this Thursday until noon on Sunday, declaring three days of official mourning. 

Juan José Santana de León was also a historical member of the Canarian Coalition and died at the age of 81 due to an illness.

He was born in the town of Máguez, in the municipality of Haría, and trained as a teacher. Although his first destination as a teacher was on the island of Gran Canaria, he later returned to Lanzarote and assumed the direction of the San Juan school in Haría for a long period of time. He was mayor, councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and councilor of the Haría City Council for several decades. 

In addition, he presided over the Canarian foundation José Clavijo y Fajardo and the Association of Friends of Wine and Cheese of Lanzarote and was honorary president of the Canarian Coalition in Lanzarote after retiring from politics.
