The PSOE of Lanzarote accuses Oswaldo Betancort and Fernando Clavijo of "subjecting the island to the greatest healthcare mistreatment of the last decade", with more than 4,700 patients awaiting a specialist consultation, paralyzed basic infrastructure, and growing uncertainty about the future of the Insular Hospital. The Socialist Group will bring a question to the next Tuesday's Cabildo Plenary to demand that the president explain what steps he intends to take regarding the deterioration of healthcare.
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, denounces that the island is suffering from "a lost legislature in healthcare matters, in which the population's needs have worsened with the complicit silence of Oswaldo Betancort and the inaction of Fernando Clavijo's government". González also warns of the privatizing tendency of the CC and PP government, which responds to the increase in waiting lists with measures such as the rental of a private clinic in Costa Teguise. "It is unacceptable to do business with healthcare while thousands of people await attention. What the Government of the Canary Islands should do is invest in a more robust public healthcare system, with more professionals, better infrastructure, and sufficient capacity to meet the population's needs," she denounces.
"Betancort has allowed systematic mistreatment of Lanzarote. He has put the interests of Coalición Canaria above those of the people of Lanzarote and Graciosa and, instead of exercising his responsibility as president of the Cabildo and deputy to defend those he represents, he has dedicated himself to justifying Clavijo's management," points out González.
The paralysis of the new health center in Playa Honda and the neglect of the Argana health center are, for González, two examples of the abandonment of Lanzarote's healthcare needs. The spokesperson considers Betancort's role in the Playa Honda case particularly serious: "He even went to the Parliament of the Canary Islands to question the investment in a center that his neighbors need, while praising the management of the Ministry of Health. He himself has contributed to giving excuses to Clavijo's government to continue delaying this infrastructure."
To this situation is added the threat over the future of the Hospital Insular and the continuity of its public geriatric care model. The PSOE considers that the lack of guarantees regarding its reform, its services, and the return of activity fuels unacceptable uncertainty for patients, families, and professionals.
“The Hospital Insular is essential for Lanzarote and for our elders. It needs a project, funding, and guarantees of continuity for its geriatric model. Its future is added to the health needs that Betancort has left undefended during this legislature. Next Tuesday we will demand that he explain what measures he is going to claim from the Clavijo Government and until when he intends to continue justifying the health mistreatment of Lanzarote,” concludes González.
