A frantic week of sailing in the bay of Mahón, Menorca, concluded on Saturday afternoon with the celebration of the Snipe World Championship, a competition that has seen the participation of three crews representing the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife. Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez, and Pedro de León and Oscar Pattenden, went into the final day with chances. Finally. Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez climbed to the third step of the podium, taking victory in the last race of the championship.
The Snipe World Championship began last Tuesday with extreme sailing conditions and from the first day, Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez took the lead in the general classification. The competition continued with two days of very little wind, and ended with two final days in which the six pending races could be recovered, to complete a total of nine races over five days of sailing.
Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez started the final day in fifth position in the general classification and achieved a third place in the first race of the day. In the second race, they crossed the finish line in 28th place and finished the competition by winning the last race. These results allowed the sailors from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife to climb to the third step of the Snipe World Championship podium and receive the Earl Elms Trophy, reserved for the winners of the last race of the championship.
Pedro de León and Oscar Pattenden began Saturday in sixth position in the general classification and had chances to fight for the podium. The Lanzaroteans did not have a good day of sailing, achieving 33rd, 70th, and 63rd places. These results placed the sailors from the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife in fifteenth position overall.
Nete Armas and Miguel Bethencourt have had less luck throughout the week. On the first day, the Lanzarotean sailors suffered a rudder breakage on their boat and could not complete the two scheduled races. After an afternoon of hard work to repair the boat, the next day they suffered a disqualification in the only race held. Nete Armas and Miguel Bethencourt did not give up, staging a great comeback to finish in 40th place overall.
The president of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, Julio Romero, and the Board of Directors, wish to congratulate Alfredo González and Cristian Sánchez for the meritorious third place achieved in the Snipe World Championship in Mahón, a success that adds to the title of champions won in 2022 and the fourth position achieved in 2024 in Argentina. Congratulations are also extended to Pedro de León and Oscar Patteden for the great competition held and to Nete Armas and Miguel Bethencourt for not giving up despite the adversities suffered.
Tribute to Jesús Quevedo “Panta”
The Snipe World Championship brought together several generations of sailors, measurers, and class officials for a fellowship meal. A meeting that served to rekindle friendships born over decades of competition and to remember all those who could not be present.
Canarian sailing was represented by the presence of Jesús Quevedo “Panta”, one of the great promoters of the Snipe class in the Canary Islands. Jesús Quevedo recalled that the Snipe class began in Gran Canaria in 1954, sailing for five years with Fel Torrent and subsequently participating in 22 Spanish Snipe Championships.
At the meeting held in Mahón, Jesús Quevedo “Panta” was accompanied by Arturo Delgado, José María Belda, Antonio Cardona Espin, Javier Aguado, Manolo Torres, Toni Estades, and Pepe Pérez, among others. A meal of fellowship and friendship that they were able to enjoy to recall shared experiences.
