Various environmental crimes continue to surprise in Lanzarote. The race of a woman sliding down a slope of the Volcán de la Corona has been one of the events that has most outraged the conejeros in recent days. As a result of this fact, the Environment Councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, has explained to Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero how the procedure to sanction this type of actions is carried out.

"The woman will be reported for violating the regulations of the Protected Natural Spaces through the Land Law", Martín advanced in the morning show Buenos días, Lanzarote. The Environment agents monitor this type of cases and "investigate through social networks to locate the person" and then take the "pertinent actions", he added.

The councilor has taken advantage of his intervention to congratulate the work of the Cabildo agents and is resolute in the obligation to continue with the procedure. "It is something that will continue, since we have to set an example of conservation." In addition, he has clarified how the sanction has been carried out and the amount that corresponds to an infraction of that type. "The fine depends on the administrative process, but at least it is 600 euros", he confirms. A quantity that can amount to "up to 3,000 euros depending on the severity of the crime", added the councilor.

Thus, Samuel Martín has recalled the measures that will be taken after the investigations. "The corresponding allegations will be presented and the legal technicians of the Environment will be the ones who process the sanction", he revealed.

The councilor has assured that it is important to investigate these cases to "value the territory and be able to continue enjoying" the Protected Natural Spaces of Lanzarote in the future. And he makes it clear that although "the woman has deleted the videos from her Instagram, the procedure will continue".

In addition, he pointed out that the solution "is not to put more signs" to avoid the problem, taking into account that "the spaces are accessed even if there are signs", he remarked supporting the sanctions that the disrespectful can face who try to access the protected areas of the island.

"The majority of foreigners pay voluntarily"

The councilor has also started talking about the environmental crimes or infractions that have been carried out by foreign tourists during their visit to the island. In this case, Martín has affirmed that these sanctions also reach those who commit the infractions. "When we identify them, we initiate the procedure and in most cases they become effective", he clarified.

In this line he has highlighted that the tourists "pay the fines voluntarily, they are not usually claimed", the councilor highlighted. Thus he has indicated that this measure is carried out to generate awareness among the population. "We try that everyone has the administrative sanction to generate awareness", Martín concluded.
