The residents of Caleta Famara continue to demonstrate against the battery parking spaces that the Teguise City Council placed in the fishing village and that has provoked the reaction of some residents of the town. Meanwhile, the Teguise City Council has spoken out about the demands of the citizens.
The Councilor for Traffic and Mobility of the Council, Eugenio Robayna, made his opinion clear on the matter during an interview last Friday on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero. For the councilor, the number of people who demonstrated at the door of the council "do not represent a majority." Thus, he stressed that "there were fifteen people at the door, don't talk to me in the plural, talk to me in the singular," he pointed out. To this figure he also added the "fourteen people who were on Famara beach the other day."
For Robayna, the Salvar Famara residents' platform, which was created on social networks to denounce the overcrowding situation in Caleta, is practically unknown. "I don't recognize that association, they haven't contacted me," he said. In addition, he revealed that the protesters do not have the approval of the Council. "The protesters in Famara do not represent me, it is a very low percentage that is demonstrating," added the mayor.
Those who, according to Robayna, represent the City Council are the "neighborhood association" with whom they have had meetings for some time. "I have met with them, you have to be upfront," he recalled. Robayna stated that the meetings with the residents are continuous, contrary to the citizens' criticisms. "They say that we only meet in the electoral stage, but it is a lie" and defended that "the City Council has been working towards the residents since 2011."
Words that support the councilor's surprise at the call for the demonstration, contrary to the version handled by the residents. "I don't understand anything, we have only put five cars in battery," he revealed to the radio microphones. In addition, he denied the veracity of the citizens' opinions, showing himself contrary to their words. "There is no parking lot, only an entrance and an exit have been regulated and the road has been put in a one-way direction," he added.
The signature collection campaign "does not convince him"
The platform has launched a campaign on the Change.org website with the aim of collecting signatures against the new Mobility Plan, after which they have received more than 1,000 signatures. Robayna was forceful in this regard. "I don't think that all the signatures are from residents of Caleta de Famara, I want to see it," he stressed. Given the reach that the campaign can have online, the councilor believes that the votes could come from outside. "Someone from London or New York signs you," he pointed out.
"I don't think that all the signatures are from residents of Caleta de Famara"
In addition, he concludes by advising citizens to also focus their concerns on other issues of vital importance to the town. "So much that they like to save Famara, let's also save it from the incivility that exists," he pointed out. He clarified that some of the attitudes of the residents "are not correct." "Let's also be aware that dogs cannot be on the beach."
