The Tourism councillor and president of the Board of Directors of the CACT, Echedey Eugenio, has requested this Thursday the “urgent” mediation of the Canarian Labor Court in the conflict opened with the workers, who have already been on strike for three days. According to him, the two parties will now be summoned by this Court in Gran Canaria, although they do not yet have a date for that meeting.

“We would have liked it to have been tomorrow, Saturday or even Sunday, but we are in the middle of August, with many staff enjoying their vacations, and they have informed us that they will receive us as soon as possible,” Eugenio pointed out. Until that day, the Tourism councillor has appealed to “the good will” of the Works Council “to suspend the strike and restore normal activity in the Centers.”

“We cannot stand idly by while an unfair and unjustified strike causes damage of incalculable consequences to the island of Lanzarote,” Eugenio states in the same statement. In addition, he adds that he has adopted this decision “in view of the refusal of the Strike Committee to accept the latest proposal from the company”, which according to him, “accepted all their demands”. And also in view of their “opposition to the mediation of the Labor Inspectorate.”

"They have disrespected us"

Now, the councillor has decided to resort to this Labor Court, which, according to the Cabildo, is “a body of mediation, arbitration and conciliation created by the Government of the Canary Islands for the extrajudicial resolution of labor disputes.” Before it, the parties must “present and justify their positions” and the councillor hopes that it will allow “reaching an agreement that puts an end to the conflict.”

“We have taken all the steps in the negotiation process within the necessary legal and formal channels; we have listened to the Strike Committee and we have tried to open channels of dialogue with the aim of avoiding the sad outcome we are witnessing; we have been disrespected but, even so, we presented a proposal that is more than favorable for the interests of the workers that has not even been answered. We have done everything in our power to resolve this conflict, but we will continue working as much as necessary to open bridges of communication and understanding with the Strike Committee,” Eugenio stated.

The new path opened this Thursday by the councillor comes as three days of strike are completed, which has already forced the closure of all Tourist Centers, with the exception of the exterior area of the Farmer's Monument.
