This past Monday, work has begun to improve the drainage of the Hurón ravine, in the area of Las Cucharas beach in Costa Teguise; work financed with its own funds by the Island Water Council.

“This action is part of the roadmap of the Lanzarote Island Water Council for the cleaning and drainage of the island's ravines, as we already did in June with the cleaning of the Valle Grande Ravine in Mala. This is to avoid runoff and overflows such as those produced during the last heavy rains last April,” says the Minister of Water of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Domingo Cejas, who was present this morning at the beginning of the works together with the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, and technicians from the Island Council and the Water Consortium of Lanzarote.

The mayor of Teguise, who assured that “the intervention is carried out after the request of the City Council”, thanked the Island Water Council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote “for the speed in carrying out the bidding and awarding of this project for a municipality, and a tourist area, which together with Arrecife suffered the worst of the floods last April. Cleaning the mouth of the ravine is essential to avoid the damage caused by the rains again.”

The project, promoted by the Island Water Council of Lanzarote, is located in the mouth section of the Hurón Ravine on Las Cucharas beach, in a section of the channel that has a length of 350 meters with an average width of 10 meters, ending at the beach.

Reinforcement of slopes, walls and other interventions

In that section, various actions will be carried out, the main ones being the removal of plant material that hinders proper drainage; the protection and definition of the channel and the reinforcement of the slopes; the construction of stone walls and restoration of weirs

In addition, throughout the section, clearing, cleaning, stone removal, relocation of breakwaters, grading and leveling actions will be necessary.

The company in charge of the work is Transportes y Excavaciones Sccatmeca, S.L with an execution period of the contract of 2 months and 2 weeks and a budget of 87,823 euros financed by the Island Water Council of Lanzarote.

This intervention by the Island Water Council is part of a global channel cleaning plan, in line with other actions such as the one carried out a few months ago in the Guacimeta ravine (San Bartolomé).
