The works on Canalejas street, in the center of Arrecife, are causing controversy among the residents and merchants of the area. Many passersby support the City Council's initiative to pedestrianize part of the capital's center, while merchants complain about the lack of parking and designated loading and unloading areas.
This Monday, one of the sections of Canalejas street, located between José Betancort and Coronel Bens streets, has been opened to traffic, after two months of works. The widening of the sidewalks and their leveling with the road have been the first step towards the City Council's project of "Recovery of the historic center" of Arrecife.
