The biologist from Lanzarote, Rosa Brito, stated that it is necessary to formalize the protection of the Arrecife marina as a Site of Scientific Interest (SIC). Brito made these statements last Tuesday during a presentation, framed within the "The coastline is ours" conference, organized by the socialist group of Arrecife.
According to the latest studies carried out by the University of La Laguna, the Arrecife marina treasures up to 40% of the marine biodiversity of the Canary Islands. In addition, scientists have located several new species for international science. These circumstances, together with the progressive deterioration of the coastline, which has placed several species in the area in danger of extinction, make it necessary, according to this expert, to classify it as a SIC.
According to Brito, the SIC file for the Arrecife marina has been initiated for the second time by the City Council in December 2008, after the first one expired in 2005. Currently, the procedure is under the responsibility of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Rosa Elena Brito has a degree in Biological Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and has extensive complementary training linked to the environment.
The Coastal Conferences, organized by the PSOE, continue on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Casa del Miedo, with the presentation "Truths about the islet of the French", by the journalist Mario Alberto Perdomo.
