The Councilor for the Environment and Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Elena Solís, has celebrated that the Teguise City Council has proceeded to remove the bins from the beaches of San Juan and Famara. A proposal promoted by the Waste Working Group of the Famara Local Council, created within the framework of the participatory process promoted by the first island corporation.

“After the participatory workshops held last March, in which different economic sectors as well as citizens were present individually, several working groups were created aimed at debating, advising, evaluating and demanding actions from the different public and private agents, and this has been one of the proposals they have been working on”, explains Elena Solís.

Specifically, in the proposal prepared and documented by the Waste Group of the Famara Local Council, it is argued that the garbage deposits "are sending the wrong message to the population, and that is that we have to leave our garbage there, when the only ones responsible for this waste are us”. Therefore, it is considered that “we should not abandon them in these containers that are located in protected natural places of great beauty, such as the beaches of the town of Caleta de Famara".

In this regard, they state that “the biggest problem is when the animals that inhabit these areas, such as crows, dogs, cats, etc., start rummaging through the garbage, extracting it from the bag and spreading it around”. They also affirm that “when the wind blows strongly, the effect is the same: the bags come out of the holes in these bins and everything inside is dispersed, thus achieving the opposite image to the one that one would want to give, creating with it also, sources of infections and unsanitary conditions”.

For this reason, it was proposed to replace the bins with informative posters on the need to take responsibility for the garbage we generate, “therefore, it is the duty of citizens to take it to the containers located in the nearest urban center”.
