The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, received this Thursday, April 3, representatives from four of the five clubs that are part of the Lanzarote Pigeon Racing Federation, with the aim of addressing their main demands, among which is the increase in Naviera Armas' tariffs, which will directly affect the transportation of their carrier pigeons to weekly competitions.

Betancort expressed his understanding and solidarity with the situation, committing to initiate conversations with the management of Naviera Armas to seek solutions that alleviate the economic burden faced by the clubs. “Pigeon racing is an essential part of our cultural and sporting heritage. It is imperative that we work together to ensure that this tradition endures and that our clubs have the necessary conditions to continue with the competition calendar,” he stated.

Representatives expressed that the recent increase in tariffs for transporting pigeons has created an unsustainable economic burden for the clubs, jeopardizing their operability and participation in inter-island events.

Pigeon racing, with a deep-rooted tradition in Lanzarote, has five active clubs and more than 200 pigeon fanciers, including the Timanfaya club, La Ilustrísima de Teguise, Tías de Lanzarote, Guatiseae, and Ondas de Lanzarote. These clubs depend on Naviera Armas due to the specific connections it offers between islands, which are essential for the development of their activities and competitions.
